Andre Agassi made sure his competitive spirit persisted off the court after winning the Miami Open in 2002.

Agassi was healthy enough to play at Key Biscayne, Florida, after missing the Australian Open early in the year due to injury.

He defeated Marcelo Rios, Thomas Johansson, Nicolas Lapentti, Agustin Calleri, and Greg Rusedski to reclaim his title.

Roger Federer, a rising star making his first-ever appearance in a Masters final, was waiting for him in the event final.

By then, Agassi had already won seven of eight Grand Slam championships, and the 6-3 6-3 3-6 6-4 triumph demonstrated his expertise.

He tied the record held by his wife, fellow tennis legend Steffi Graf, with his fifth Miami Open victory.

After winning the men’s and women’s titles at Wimbledon in 1992, the couple first met there. Nine years later, they were married at their home in Las Vegas.

After a dazzling career that included 22 singles Grand Slam victories and five Miami Open victories, Graf retired in 1999.

Agassi and his wife were tied for Florida championships after Agassi defeated Federer, but he was eager to outdo her.

During his news conference, he stated, “You know, the way things are going, I have a shot at passing her,”

“Because [laughs] I know she’s not… She will not be able to win another one. I’m going up in the family, you know.”

When questioned if he and Graf had a lighthearted competition off the tennis court, Agassi insisted that she maintains her humility.

“I suppose in my own mind there is, you know?” he said. “I believe we approach things in different ways.

I'm moving up in the household" - When Andre Agassi sent sweet message to wife Steffi Graf after equalling her Miami Open record

“She doesn’t really care about any of her statistics throughout the years, and she undoubtedly wants the best for me.

“I am somewhat more knowledgeable about them than she is. However, I am well familiar with mine. I remind her of that really quickly.

“But, you know, I don’t get very far. She accepts it with great humility.

Agassi quickly overtook Graf at the Miami Open, winning the competition for the sixth and final time in 2003.

In order to accomplish his hat-trick and earn the most men’s singles championships, he defeated Carlos Moya 6-3 6-3 in the final this time.

“Beating my wife at something is the best accomplishment of it all,” he stated with a cheeky smile in his post-win interview.

“I can’t do anything better than her but I found a way to get through today, which was huge, huge for me.”

Since then, Novak Djokovic has tied Agassi’s record of six Miami Open victories; the Serbian’s most recent victory was in 2016.

Therefore, after a poor performance at Indian Wells, he has a chance to lead the charts himself this year.

With a bye into the second round, Djokovic, the fourth seed, will play either fellow Serb Hamad Medjedovic or Rinky Hijikata.
