What we know: The Gardners announced in a statement that Miller and a number of other family members had been unwell while on vacation.

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st,” the couple said in a letter.

The Gardners said they still couldn’t imagine their lives without the teen’s contagious grin, calling him a loving brother and son.

“He cherished his family, friends, hunting, fishing, baseball, golf, and football. They stated, “He lived life to the fullest every single day.” “Our prayers go out to Miller’s teammates and friends, as well as to all other families who have lost a child far too soon as we share their grief.”

What they’re saying: The Yankees also issued a statement about Miller’s passing.

“Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner,” the organization stated. “Words seem meaningless and inadequate when attempting to convey such an unfathomable loss. Not only did Brett spend more than 17 years growing up in this organization, but so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller.

“We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their community of family and friends in mourning the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature,” the statement said.

What we do not know: It is unknown what sickness the Gardner family members suffered from or where they went on vacation.

After being chosen by the New York Yankees in 2005 and making his Major League Baseball debut in 2008, Brett Gardner played his whole 14-year career with the franchise.

Over the years, Gardner—who was renowned for his quickness, leadership, and defense—became an important member of the Yankees.

Because of his unwavering work ethic and commitment to the game, he became known as a fan favorite.

Gardner was a vital member of the Yankees’ lineup as an outfielder, especially during their most recent World Series championship run in 2009.

Following the 2021 season, he announced his retirement and has not played baseball since.
