Breaking news: The Philadelphia Eagles CB/S, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions.
The Eagles will bid farewell to another defensive player.
Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox, who was a fourth-round pick in 2018 and spent seven years in Philadelphia, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions. His girlfriend first announced the news on Instagram, and PhillyVoice was able to confirm the signing with a league source. Maddox was a good slot corner at different points in his career, but he had trouble staying healthy.
At the end of March, Maddox will turn 29. After the Week 5 bye, he was benched in favor of rookie Cooper DeJean after a difficult first few weeks of the 2024 season. He was attacked by opposing offenses, most notably by the Bucs eight times during the Eagles’ Week 4 loss in Tampa. He did have a good moment in the Super Bowl, when he swatted away a Mahomes 4th down pass, forcing a turnover on downs.
It was the play that came before the “DeVonta Dagger.”
Maddox is a valuable backup at safety and slot corner, even though he is no longer regarded as one of the league’s top slot corners. In addition, he was a terrific teammate and locker room personality who was eager to coach DeJean, the guy who finally took his position in the starting lineup.
Slot corner depth is lacking for the Eagles.
Maddox, who went to Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit, will go from being a Super Bowl contender in Philadelphia to another one there.
