Although many people think Jameson Williams will ultimately sign a significant contract extension with the Detroit Lions, not everyone shares that belief. The budget is already stretched by paying Amon-Ra St. Brown top dollar, so offering Williams another big contract might be too much. If Detroit’s front management sees things the same way, they’ll need to have a backup plan. According to CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso, they could already have one in mind.

Lions Add Luther Burden in Mock Draft Trapasso’s latest three-round mock draft has the Lions grabbing Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden in the first round. The idea? Preparing for life without Williams down the road. Burden’s numbers dipped a bit in 2024 — he had 61 receptions for 676 yards and six touchdowns — but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

“Burden is a top receiver prospect with a ton of upside, so don’t be fooled by his 2024 stats,” Trapasso stated.

Why Detroit Should Bear the Burden

Burden caught 86 catches for 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns in 2023, making him one of college football’s most dynamic playmakers. He caught 192 passes for 2,263 yards and 21 touchdowns throughout his time in college. He is a fluid route runner who knows how to create plays after the catch in addition to being quick.

Burden made an impression at the NFL Combine with a 40-yard dash time of 4.41 seconds and a 10-yard split time of 1.54 seconds. He is a prime outside target because of his size, strength, and speed—he is 6 feet and 206 pounds.
