Marlins Anniversary: Luis Castillo records first career hit, walk-off - Fish Stripes

Luis Gil will be sidelined for a while, Gerrit Cole is gone for the season, and the New York Yankees will probably have to contend with another injury all season long. Although it’s difficult, pitching injuries are more common than ever before, yet the game is the game.

Trading for another starter would be the prudent course of action. No matter how much they would like to say otherwise, the Yankees have money to spend and a few prospects to deal.

Luis Castillo may be the ideal acquisition if they are prepared to accept a wage. He has a five-year, $108 million contract that expires in 2027 and has a 2028 vesting option.

In exchange for a few players who were ready for the major leagues, Zach Pressnell of NewsWeek negotiated a deal for the Yankees to acquire him.

Given the serious doubts surrounding Gil and Cole, the Yankees may try to make a big deal to add another starting pitcher to their rotation. Luis Castillo, the star player for the Seattle Mariners, may be a great asset to the Yankees’ team. A few seasons back, when the Cincinnati Reds were trying to move Castillo, the Yankees were apparently in on him. However, Castillo ended up in Seattle.

The Bronx Bombers would probably have to give up some major league-ready prospects like Spencer Jones, Everson Pereira, or Jorbit Vivas in order to get the righty. The Yankees could want to consider this move, but it would also cost them a couple more prospects, Pressnell reported.

Castillo Receives “Top” The target
It was anticipated that Castillo would be accessible in the winter. He is still on the roster as of right now since the Seattle Mariners didn’t get what they sought from the New York Yankees or any other team.

The Mariners are always prepared to cut payroll, but the right-hander is on a great contract. That contract may be an alluring offer, and it might make sense if the Yankees have prospects they desire.

Jack Murray of Bleacher Report called the veteran one of the Yankees’ “top” targets for reasons other than his current deal.

Although Seattle may not be interested in moving Castillo, the righty may accept a compelling deal. The 32-year-old, who is under contract until at least 2027, might be able to stay in the rotation for a few more years after going 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA in 2024, Murray writes.

Will He Be Traded by the Mariners?
It’s not impossible that the New York Yankees will move on from Castillo. They wanted to do it in the winter, but they should also feel very comfortable playing in the extremely mediocre American League West.

Additionally, they have a full rotation and may consider moving Castillo for a needy position if the price is right.

However, a deal for Castillo is less likely now than it was at the start of the summer, according to Adam Jude of the Seattle Times.

Jude wrote, “The Mariners will keep an eye on the market for possible roster upgrades, but multiple major-league sources with direct knowledge of the club’s plans indicate that trading veteran right-hander Luis Castillo, their highest-paid player, is less likely now than it was early in the winter.”
