Breaking news: The New York Yankees’ rotation is in trouble after losing 40% of their starting staff to injury in a single week.
As spring training progresses, the New York Yankees rotation is still beset by injuries.
The Yankees were informed earlier this week that Luis Gil, the current American League Rookie of the Year, would be out for several months because of a high-grade lat strain in his right throwing shoulder.
With 15-9 records in 29 starts, a 3.50 ERA, 117 ERA+, 1.193 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts in a career-high 151 2/3 innings pitched, Gil became one of the Yankees’ finest arms in 2024. That being said, the rookie right-hander walked an MLB-high 77 batters.
Gil’s injury history raises further concerns about this setback. After having reconstructive elbow surgery, he was only able to make one start in 2022 and missed the whole 2023 Major League Baseball season. He is anticipated to be out until at least June due to this most recent injury.
The Yankees are currently facing potentially terrible news about their star player.
Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees is “concerned” about elbow pain.
Gerrit Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young winner, may miss a considerable amount of time with the Yankees due to elbow pain after starting spring training on Thursday. Cole had a rough game against the Minnesota Twins, giving up six runs in only two and a third innings.
He has already had diagnostic imaging done, but the findings are not yet public knowledge. Cole is looking for a second opinion right now.
Cole told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, “We have an initial idea, but we’re going to wait to see exactly what everybody says before we come to our conclusion.”
The 34-year-old ace has experienced arm problems during spring training for the second time in a row. Due to inflammation and edema in his right elbow, he only made 22 starts throughout the previous season, including the playoffs, and didn’t start until June.
Cole told MLB.com, “I still have some hope.” “I’m still awaiting the opinions of the experts.”
Two-time All-Star Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt—who has been battling a tight back himself—make up the Yankees rotation right now. Marcus Stroman, who the Yankees allegedly attempted to trade throughout the summer, will probably start the season in the rotation.
New York may use Allan Winans, Carlos Carrasco, or Will Warren to take the final posit
