Veteran infielder Jon Berti was added to the New York Yankees’ Opening Day roster last spring due to injuries. It seems like history is being repeated, except this time in Tokyo rather than Houston. Craig Counsell, the manager of the Chicago Cubs, declared this week that All-Star second baseman Nico Hoerner would not be joining the club in Japan. Hoerner is still restricted in spring training after undergoing flexor tendon surgery in October of last year.

Berti, who currently has a one-year deal with the Cubs, may start at second base as a result of Hoerner’s absence. Another contender to start the Cubs’ March 18 opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers is Vidal Brujan. Just a few days before their 2024 season opening against the Houston Astros, the Yankees signed Berti. In 25 games, he hit.273, with a home run, six RBI, and five stolen bases.

A left calf strain kept Berti out of action for the most of the season, but he made a comeback in time for the Yankees’ postseason run. Berti, who stole 41 bases for the Miami Marlins in 2022, is far better known for his speed than his strength. A flexible, quick utility player is essential for any squad.

Counsell expressed his optimism that Hoerner, the 2023 Gold Glove winner, will be well enough to play in the Cubs’ domestic opening against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 27. According to the Cubs’ official website, Counsell stated, “We’re in a really good spot,” and “it would be a very positive result if we can have him for domestic Opening Day, going back to the surgery date.”
