Cardinals' Nolan Arenado Had 'Genuine Interest' From AL Contender

This winter, the New York Yankees lost infielder Gleyber Torres, and they haven’t done much to find a replacement. Nolan Arenado, an infielder with the St. Louis Cardinals, has been linked to New York; however, Arenado’s no-trade clause has probably prevented any deal with the Yankees. Jacob Mountz of FanSided recently speculated that the Yankees will trade for Josh Smith, an infielder for the Texas Rangers, and abandon their plan to add Arenado. Here is the entire offer that Mountz made:

Nolan Arenado 'Really Likes' Idea of Trade to American League East Team

Received by the New York Yankees: INF Smith, Josh Received by the Texas Rangers are RHP Will Warren (ranked fifth), OF Everson Pereira (prospect number 10) “The Texas Rangers have one untapped option,” Mountz stated. “Last season, utility infielder/outfielder Josh Smith filled in for injured Josh Jung at third base for the Rangers. Any interested team can easily afford him, since he is expected to earn $800,000 this season before becoming eligible for arbitration.

“After putting up subpar stats in his first two seasons, the 27-year-old left-handed hitter came alive in a blazing first half, hitting for a batting average of.293 with 10 home runs. Unfortunately, Smith’s effectiveness declined halfway through the season due to a minor injury. Nevertheless, Smith was awarded a Silver Slugger when he finished the season with 13 home runs through 523 at-bats and a slash line of.258/.337/.394/.731.

Houston Astros take another shot at landing Nolan Arenado

Smith may be the Yankees’ man if they’re searching for someone who is skilled, reasonably priced, and manageable. Since the Cardinals’ infielder is a costly veteran, he is the complete opposite of Arenado. Smith might fit nicely as one of the Yankees’ future infielders, but this trade package could be a little high. It would be costly to give up both Warren and Pereira, but Smith could find it worthwhile in the end.
