Joe Kelly, a reliever for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is thinking of retiring due to a delayed recovery from a shoulder injury. Through the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast, the veteran provided an update on his free agency process.

Kelly remarked, “I’m not 100 percent yet.” “I’m hoping to reach 100 percent.”

Kelly, 36, had a shoulder injury that prevented him from playing for the Dodgers during the postseason. Earlier in the 2024 season, he also missed two months because of the same shoulder ailment.

Kelly made 35 appearances with the Dodgers last season, going 1-1 with a 4.78 ERA. The Southern California native struck out 35 batters in 32 innings during his second stint with Los Angeles, while limiting opponents to 31 hits.

The three-time World Series winner is expected to give up his uniform if he doesn’t reach 100 percent, but Kelly thinks he will. At the moment, the reliever is a free agent.

When asked when she will be healthy, Kelly said, “Eventually.” “We’ll see. Additionally, f— it if I don’t. But before approaching interested teams about a 2025 deal, I want to get there first.

Given the crowded roster, there is no assurance the Dodgers would add the veteran to the bullpen even if Kelly chooses to pitch in 2025. Evan Phillips, Michael Kopech, Kirby Yates, Blake Treinen, Tanner Scott, Alex Vesia, and Anthony Banda are now part of L.A.’s eight-man bullpen.

It’s crucial to remember that Phillips and Kopech will probably start the season on the disabled list, leaving three positions free. Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin are among contenders for a bullpen spot. The other will probably wind up pitching in relief, depending on who secures the No. 5 starting spot in the rotation.

Kelly gave the impression earlier this summer that playing someplace in 2025 would be Dodgers or bust.

“I am happy wherever. Our connection is good. There is just one place we will return to, as I mentioned, once I am well. It’s similar to Clayton (Kershaw’s) arrangement,” Kell remarked. Either that or, you know, you never know if my body doesn’t recover as well as it would want to. Thus, we shall see.

The veteran reliever had several memorable moments while wearing a Dodgers uniform, regardless of whether the team decides to re-sign Kelly.
