Breaking news: The Lions sign $51 million former pro bowler from Rams.

A recurrent theme for the Detroit Lions lately appears to be the possible comeback of well-known players. The first person to say that the Lions are one of the two clubs he would like to play for next season was former Lions cornerback Darius Slay. Another former Lion now seems to have a chance of making a comeback. Matt Okada of NFL.com identified former Lions guard Jonah Jackson as a possible cut candidate for the Los Angeles Rams earlier this week. Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports recommended the Lions to pursue their former guard if he becomes available, given the uncertainty surrounding Jackson’s future with the Rams.
Jackson was selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he quickly established himself as a key member of their offensive line.
He started all 16 games as a rookie. In his second season he was awarded a Pro Bowler. Before he became a free agent, he continued to be the starting player for the next two years. He signed a big contract on the free agency market after four successful seasons with the Lions. He is among the top 10 most paid guards in the NFL with his three-year, $51 million deal with the Rams. Regretfully, the Rams’ 2024 signing didn’t work out.
Due to an injury, Jackson was only able to play in four games during the regular season. In the four games, he gave up nine pressures.
The Rams may now choose to let him go, and the timing may be right for Jackson to rejoin the Lions. He left, and the Lions replaced him with Kevin Zeitler, who signed a one-year contract. Although Zeitler had a good season in Detroit, he is currently in free agency and may have a large market. Maintaining continuity on the line in the event that Zeitler departs would be greatly aided by Jackson returning to take his place on the offensive line.
Christian Mahogany, who has only made two career starts, is now on their list as a possible Zeitler substitute. As Mahogany continues to grow, the Lions might have to search for a seasoned player to rely on. Although Jackson’s injury problems in recent seasons are concerning, he has shown that he can be a valuable member of this offensive line and probably wouldn’t significantly reduce the team’s cap room. Although Jackson must be released first, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him return to Detroit if the Rams choose to let him go.
