Estimating Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s Next Contract

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Toronto Blue Jays were unable to reach an agreement on an extension. Given the Blue Jays’ history with free agency superstars, the organization may want to explore dealing him before he goes away without a contract. He will be a free agent next winter. Like Juan Soto when he was transferred to the New York Yankees, Guerrero has one year of control. In that transaction, Soto and Trent Grisham were given to the San Diego Padres in exchange for six players. This deal, suggested by Matthew Sookram of FanSided, would provide the Blue Jays a comparable return and hasten their rebuild:

First baseman Ryan Clifford (Mets No. 4), right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean (Mets No. 9), outfielder Drew Gilbert (Mets No. 3), and shortstop Jett Williams (MLB No. 58 prospect) are all acquired by the Blue Jays. First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is acquired by the Mets.

“The Mets wouldn’t have to give up any MLB-ready talent in this trade, while the Blue Jays would get plenty of prospects in their early 20’s with high upside to help jumpstart a rebuild,” Sookram stated. “It may seem like a lot for the Mets to give up, but if Guerrero starts the season strong (he’s projected by FanGraphs to have 4.8 fWAR this season, the most among all first basemen in 2025), then they should be able to swing a deal similar to what the Nationals got when they traded Juan Soto to the Padres.”

Four of the Mets’ top prospects, who may aid in a speedy franchise reconstruction, would be acquired by the Blue Jays. Bo Bichette, who will also be a free agent at the end of the season, may be replaced by Williams. The Mets would have the inside track on Guerrero in free agency, but they would also be stuck in the infield for a season. The Mets may give Guerrero a big contract that would keep him and Soto together for the future if Pete Alonso decides to opt out.
