Breaking news: The Seahawks cut ties with controversial favorite defensive edge rusher due to….

Seahawks' Uchenna Nwosu signs three-year extension | The Seattle Times

With a significant offseason deadline approaching on Friday, the Seahawks have apparently decided to postpone making a decision until later in the offseason.

On the eve of 2023’s training camp, the Seattle Seahawks and Uchenna Nwosu reached a three-year, $45 million contract deal, giving the Hawks consistency on the defensive edge that they had been lacking for a number of years.

Sadly, Nwosu’s 23rd season came to an abrupt end less than three months later when he tore his pectoral muscle during a victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. This injury put him on injured reserve and terminated his 2023 campaign. The 2024 season was then cut short by injuries, with Nwosu playing in just six games for the second consecutive season.

Suddenly, the once-promising edge rusher in his prime had only played in 12 games, registered 473 defensive snaps, and had just 30 tackles and three sacks despite earning over $26 million in the 19 months since he signed his contract deal. The possibility of moving on from Nwosu for cap considerations over the summer was a topic of intense fan conversation as a result of all of that.

The fact that $6 million of Nwosu’s $14.48 million basic salary would vest into a full guarantee on the sixth day following the 2025 Super Bowl—which is, of course, tomorrow—was the obvious barrier to the Hawks’ decision to let him go. According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, a decision has been made since deadlines are driving action and the Seahawks are among the clubs who need to clear the most salary space before the new league year begins on March 12.

What development with Nwosu's Seattle Seahawks contract says

Henderson adds that the decision has been taken to hold off on making a choice for a little while longer. As of writing, no specific date has been given, but it seems like those who have called for the Seahawks to let go of Nwosu won’t see that happen anytime soon.

If the claim is accurate, the specifics of a new vesting date will probably be revealed once the modified contract is submitted to the league office and accepted.
