Breaking news: The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a mega deal with former Red Sox infielder.
Michael Chavis signs a minor league contract with the Dodgers.
Michael Chavis, a former member of the Boston Red Sox, has agreed to a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the current World Series winners.
The 29-year-old infielder Chavis was once considered a top prospect in Boston’s system. He has had trouble securing a permanent position in the major leagues, though. With 18 home runs and 58 RBI in 2019, he made his Major League Baseball debut and showed promise. Since then, he has played mostly as a utility infielder with the Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Washington Nationals. He didn’t play in the major leagues in 2024, after hitting 14 home runs for the Pirates in 2022. He hasn’t been able to replicate his rookie performance.
The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya broke the story that the infielder was in the Dodgers’ camp. Chavis will now have the opportunity to fight for a position on the Dodgers’ roster as a non-roster invite to spring training.
Chavis has sometimes displayed power at the plate while playing first, second, and third base. His ability to maneuver over the infield and generate right-handed pop has allowed him to remain a reliable depth option despite his difficulties in the major leagues. Chavis might gain from the Dodgers’ development system as he attempts to revive his career because of their history of optimizing players’ potential.
As they get ready for another championship run, the Dodgers have been accumulating depth following their World Series victory. Chavis will have to establish himself in a deep infield bunch when he attends a tough spring training camp. If he does well, his adaptability may make him a useful bench piece.
It won’t be easy to make the Opening Day roster, but if he does well in camp, he may be called up later in the season or used as a backup infielder. The former top prospect is currently searching Los Angeles for a new beginning. He want to contribute to another championship-caliber squad and at last establish a steady MLB role.
