The defending American League champions may be able to return in 2025 if they commit to DJ LeMahieu following his performance in the previous seasons.
In 2024, Jose Iglesias had an unexpected season with the New York Mets. The seasoned infielder had a.830 OPS and a.337 hitting average. He covered several defensive voids in addition to making an attacking impact. With the exception of first base, Iglesias can play every infield position, proving his flexibility.
The Iglesias era in Queens appears to be over with the acquisition of Nick Madrigal by his previous squad. Having said that, their cross-town opponent need to give acquiring the versatile infielder serious consideration. It’s obvious that the New York Yankees need another infield player. The most probable contender to take that position is DJ LeMahieu, although it’s difficult to overlook his drop in recent seasons.
In 2025, DJ LeMahieu may hinder the Yankees, while Iglesias might offer
The Yankees veteran has had a poor.698 OPS since 2021. He had a.269 on-base percentage and a.204 batting average in 2024. The World Series was nearly over for the Yankees. Aaron Judge added Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt to the lineup in place of Juan Soto. Cashman also acquired Devin Williams, the game’s top closer. With the addition of lefty Max Fried to the rotation, Gerrit Cole also has more support. LeMahieu’s finest days are over, but he was a tough player in the Bronx a few seasons ago. He could now be a factor preventing them from moving forward.
The Yankees should sign Iglesias to a short-term contract. Many find it unexpected that the OMG signer hasn’t piqued their curiosity. He has been a reliable hitter throughout his career, despite being a surprise in 2024. Iglesias has a.294 batting average and a.733 OPS since 2021. Additionally, he is a better choice than Oswaldo Cabrera, who is presumably vying for an infield position. Over his three seasons with New York, Cabrera’s hitting average is.233.
Iglesias may potentially be used defensively by New York. With the former All-Star, Anthony Volpe may have additional rest days at shortstop. Iglesias would probably shift back to second base alongside Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is a natural second baseman.
LeMahieu hasn’t accomplished anything since 2021, but he might prove us wrong. Cabrera is also not a very good choice. Judge and Cole are becoming older. With their two fan favorites, New York has a chance to win a World Series, therefore they shouldn’t spend money on dubious infielders. It wouldn’t hurt to sign Iglesias, and the potential is far greater than relying on LeMahieu or Cabrera for the final infield position.
