Remembering Kris Kristofferson

The most well-known qualities of Kris Kristofferson are his intense songs and strong voice. Throughout his career, he wasn’t particularly known for stirring up trouble. Nevertheless, the “Bobby McGee” hitmaker did create a big impression in the past. Let’s examine only three of Kris Kristofferson’s contentious incidents!

1. Supporting Sinead O’Connor Following “SNL”

During her 1992 Saturday Night Live musical, Sinead O’Connor famously denounced the abuse of minors in the Catholic Church. The response was overwhelmingly negative. Less than two weeks after that well-known Saturday Night Live appearance, O’Connor performed at a Bob Dylan tribute show at Madison Square Garden.

Despite the obvious rage in the audience, Kris Kristofferson proudly had her presented.

Prior to O’Connor’s performance, he had declared, “I’m really proud to introduce this next artist whose name became synonymous with courage and integrity.”

After leaving the stage, O’Connor and her band were jeered. Kristofferson encouraged her by saying, “Don’t let the b*stards get you down.” Despite the fact that Kristofferson’s backing of O’Connor at the time angered many, he was a real one.

2. “Comin’ Down on Sunday Morning”

The 1969 release of “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” a more subdued version of Kris Kristofferson’s contentious moments, was at least somewhat contentious. Ray Stevens recorded the song for the first time in 1969 after Kristofferson wrote it, but Johnny Cash’s recording the following year made it a number one smash.

This outstanding composition altered the course of country music and provided Kristofferson with the boost he required to establish himself as a full-time, renowned performer. It’s a straightforward song about loneliness, but at the time, the lyric “I’m wishing Lord that I was stoned” was rather forbidden. When network officials ordered Johnny Cash to delete that phrase before he performed his friend’s song on his TV show, he famously refused.

3. The Alleged Altercation With Toby Keith

The actor Ethan Hawke is the source of this hypothetical item on our list of contentious Kris Kristofferson moments. Hawke wrote a few years ago about a purported event that happened during Willie Nelson’s 2003 birthday celebration. At the time, Toby Keith called it “a fictitious f***ing lie.” Kris Kristofferson claimed that although his wife remembered it, he did not. Who can tell whether it really did happen? For the interest of amusement, we will nevertheless include it on our list.

“What the f*** did you just say to me?” Kristofferson allegedly said after Keith made a nasty remark regarding his political views. Kristofferson reportedly remarked, “Don’t turn your back to me, boy,” when Keith attempted to leave. Then, in a fit of rage, he asked Keith if he had ever been in the military.

According to reports, Kristofferson stated, “The answer is no, you have not.” “Have you ever murdered a man? What? Have you ever killed someone and then cashed the payment you received from your nation for it? No, you haven’t. So, please stop talking.

There was some controversy around the entire fiasco once Hawke’s account appeared in Rolling Stone. Although we have not yet confirmed whether it truly occurred, we wouldn’t be shocked if it did.
