According to one trade proposal, the New York Yankees could acquire an All-Star reliever in a three-player deal in exchange for Marcus Stroman.

Patrick McAvoy of SportingNews proposed a deal that would see the Yankees dealing Stroman to the San Diego Padres in an intriguing trade.

Yankees acquire:

The Robert Suarez Padres obtain:

Stroman, Marcus
Brando Mayea (prospect number 14)
$5 million in cash
The suggested trade would be fascinating since San Diego would receive a quality prospect and a starting pitcher, while New York would strengthen its bullpen.

Robert Suarez: From Opening Day pain to playoff gain - East Village Times

After starting his professional career in the NBP, Suarez joined San Diego in 2022 and was named an All-Star in 2024. He could be a set-up man for the Yankees and also provide them with closing experience. The right-hander went 9-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 65 games and 36 saves, and he went 3.1 scoreless innings and recorded 2 saves in the playoffs. He is currently in the third year of a five-year, $46 million contract, but there is an opt-out after the 2025 season.

Stroman’s compensation would be somewhat offset by the money, and New York would relinquish him. The right-hander was left off the playoff roster despite being in the latter year of a two-year, $37 million contract. In 29 starts, Stroman had a 4.32 ERA and a 10-9 record.

Meanwhile, Mayea is a 19-year-old Cuban outfield prospect. In 2024, he participated in rookie ball and batted.281 in 35 games with 9 RBIs.

Yankees Need Another Reliever, Says Analyst
Stroman is being sought by New York, and McAvoy thinks this transaction benefits both parties.

San Diego acquires a starter and a prospect in exchange for Suarez, who has been speculated to be involved in trade negotiations. Meanwhile, New York solidifies the bullpen and breaks off Stroman’s contract.

Even with Williams, the Yankees might still use a bit more help in the bullpen. According to McAvoy, Tommy Kahnle, a former Yankees reliever, accepted a contract with the Detroit Tigers. The San Diego Padres may be a good fit for the Yankees, who would benefit from adding another reliever. Robert Suarez, an All-Star reliever, has been the subject of various trade speculations involving San Diego this summer. After taking over as the team’s closer in 2024, he recorded 36 saves and a 2.77 ERA. He was excellent for the Padres, but there have been whispers about him.

“The Yankees should make a serious push for him and see if a trade involving Stroman can be reached if he is available. Adding someone like Suarez could only benefit New York, which should be fully committed to the 2025 campaign, McAvoy continued.

Devin Williams was acquired by New York, but the Yankees would only be improved by having Suarez and Williams as a one-two punch in the bullpen.

Stroman Encourages Trade Conjecture
Throughout the winter, Stroman’s name has been mentioned in trade discussions, and the pitcher has contributed to the escalation of the rumors.

As of January 28, the right-hander unfollowed the team’s Instagram account, which has further fueled trade rumors.

The Yankees have been publicly attempting to deal Stroman, according to MLB source Robert Murray.

Murray stated on The Baseball Insiders that a Marcus Stroman deal would seem more plausible than not.

Stroman has been named an All-Star thrice.
