A mistake is going to be made by the New York Yankees. The Yankees want to start talks on a long-term deal for manager Aaron Boone, according to Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, who made this announcement in an exclusive appearance on Yankees Hot Stove on the YES Network on Tuesday.

Steinbrenner told Meredith Marakovits that it was an easy choice to accept Boone’s option for the 2025 season, which will mark his seventh season as manager of the Yankees.

“I’ve always thought Aaron Boone was a very good manager and that’s his reputation in the industry,” Steinbrenner stated. “In the upcoming days and weeks, we will be speaking with him. Right now, we’re focusing on the roster itself as our first priority. However, discussions regarding perhaps remaining longer than that will be had with him.

Under Boone, New York had a 603-429 record, three division titles, and six postseason trips. Even with the success, the franchise wouldn’t benefit from a long-term agreement for Boone. This is the New York Yankees, and Boone’s playoff record is not particularly Yankee-like, even though regular season success may fly with other clubs.

New York had a 22-23 record in the six postseasons under Boone. They eventually made their breakthrough in 2024, winning their first World Series since 2009. They did, however, only win one game, and during several of the defeats, supporters questioned Boone’s management choices.

In an attempt to win Game 1, Boone asked for Nestor Cortes to enter the game as the Yankees led by one run going into the bottom of the tenth inning. The issue? Fans asked why Cortes didn’t bring up Tim Hill after he let up a walk-off grand slam to Freddie Freeman and after he hadn’t pitched in more than a month.

The Yankees led 5-0 going into the fifth inning of the pivotal Game 5, but everything fell apart. In one of the worst postseason collapses ever, New York made three mistakes in the dreadful inning, which allowed the Dodgers to rally and tie the game at five. Fans were upset with Boone because he stayed in the bench the entire inning and they wanted him to come out and help his team.

Is that the manager the Yankees are thinking about extending for a long time? I know there aren’t many strong candidates to succeed Boone, but when will the managerial blunders get to be too much?
