Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions were eliminated from the playoffs earlier than they would have liked, much like the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams fell to the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Lions lost to the Washington Commanders.

Following their playoff defeat, Goff and the Lions witnessed a coach exodus, losing both coordinators, notably offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, to head coaching roles with other clubs.

However, despite Johnson’s departure, the Lions still have faith in Goff and his potential to get better.

On January 23, Lions general manager Brad Holmes told reporters, “I feel very confident in that.” “Those are topics we discuss that won’t change as long as Dan [Campbell] is the head coach and I am here. Therefore, there can be a slight change to the plan. As with the coach question, if a player is coming in here, he is either a Detroit Lion or he is not.

“I have confidence that everything will work out because I believe that Jared in particular is something that’s on Dan’s mind when he considers what will be best for him [Goff].”

“Goff is not a product of Johnson’s system, in my opinion. As a coordinator, he was obviously extremely effective with Ben. However, he was a successful quarterback in a different system before he even came here, and I believe that he is a better and more mature quarterback today than he was in those early years. Thus, I don’t anticipate that,” Holmes stated.

The man is at his prime, in my opinion. Every year, he has improved farther. And I believe that just entering it is what I mean when I say “Prime.” because he continues to rise. Every year we’ve been here, I believe, the following year has been, “Dude, he’s playing at a high level.” He’s playing -,’ and his skill keeps becoming better. I simply have a lot of trust in Dan, to reiterate. Additionally, I am confident that he will ensure Jared is in a favorable position.

Three years after being traded from the Rams, in November 2024, Goff agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract deal. According to Over The Cap, the Lions won’t be able to cut Goff at a profit until 2026. With $34.6 million in dead money, a designation made after June 1st would save $35 million.

The consequences of a possible deal involving the 30-year-old quarterback would be comparable. The Lions will first have the chance to save money in 2026 with a trade after June 1.

With a dead cap of $14.6 million, such a move would save $55 million.

After losing in the playoffs, Lions teammates defend former Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

In the playoff defeat against the Commanders, Goff, the first overall choice in the 2016 draft, completed 57.5% of his throws for 313 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions. In addition, he fumbled once and was fired twice.

In the wake of the game, he was heavily criticized.

But Goff was protected by teammates including Lions offensive lineman Frank Ragnow and Penei Sewell.

On January 18, Ragnow declared to reporters, “I will ride with Jared Goff until the day I die.” “Any part of life. Football, whatever it is. One of the most charismatic people, athletes, etc. I will always be there for him.
