CBS Sports: The Cowboys are criticized by Michael Irvin for employing Brian Schottenheimer.
Although he has nothing personal against Brian Schottenheimer, Michael Irvin is not happy with the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to promote him from offensive coordinator to head coach. Irvin expressed his displeasure with the hiring in a video that was uploaded to his YouTube channel on Saturday night. In the video, Irvin mentioned two NFC East teams that are competing for the conference championship and expressed his displeasure that the Cowboys have fallen so far behind.
“First of all, we’re losing ground in this NFC,” stated Irvin.
Irvin wanted outside forces to bring in some change. He believed that the Cowboys needed a fresh voice that would provide discipline, as they lacked it.
“You’re replacing the head coach with someone who was previously there. I’m concerned about things you lose there that you can’t get back. … They have no curfew. They lack self-control. How can that be fixed, then? When you’re coming from the inside, how do you accomplish that? Irvin pondered.
Irvin also believes that the Cowboys’ reputation as “America’s Team” may be at risk due to their lack of success.
“How can they pass it down when they don’t even know about it? In 10 years, it would have been a generation that knows nothing about a championship from the so-called ‘America’s Team.’”
Irvin had claimed last month that he wanted the Cowboys to split company with Mike McCarthy, citing a need for discipline as the cause. He favored hiring Deion Sanders.
Irvin stated, “Here’s my problem: We missed an opportunity.” “I advocated for the hiring of Deion Sanders as the head coach. And I still stand 10 toes down on that push.”
