ESPN: The New York Yankees set to make a historic trade for a controversial $200 million superstar.
Stars Max Fried, Devin Williams, Paul Goldschmidt, and Cody Bellinger have already joined the New York Yankees. Before opening day, they may make one more big transaction. This trade package, proposed by Fireside Yankees of Empire Sports Media, would send Carlos Correa to the Bronx from the Minnesota Twins: Shortstop is given to the Yankees. Carlos Correa The Twins acquire right-handed pitcher Ian Hamilton, right-handed pitcher Chase Hampton (No. 6 prospect), catcher/first baseman Rafael Flores, and infielder Georeg Lombard Jr. (No. 3 prospect).
“He is a great all-around hitter who can hit the ball to all fields while playing elite defense,” Fireside Yankees wrote. “If the Yankees move him to third base, he could have an easier time staying on the field as shortstop can take a huge toll on a player’s lower half.” Correa signed a $200 million, six-year contract in 2023, but it includes vesting options for 2029–2032. By moving him to third base, the Yankees would be able to solve their infield dilemma by allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to play second base.
At the winter meetings, president of baseball operations Derek Falvey and general manager Jeremy Zoll noted that they are not actively trying to move players like Correa, but they will listen to calls on all of their players. “And what we tell every team is: Listen, we’re open to being creative,” added Falvey. “We can’t rule anything out before we hear it, no matter who the player is, and so we’ll just be respectful of their process and what they’re going through and try to bounce some innovative ideas around. At various points in time, it’s what brought us to a Pablo trade or something like. Therefore, we must have an open mind toward those things.
The Yankees would receive one of the finest players in baseball in exchange for giving up two of their top ten prospects. Correa is a Platinum Glover and three-time All-Star. Yankees supporters, meanwhile, could feel differently about Correa.
Correa played with the Houston Astros, who were notorious in 2017. His inclusion might be contentious given his role in the cheating controversy that contributed to the Yankees’ elimination from the postseason.
