Braves Franchise History 1984: Phil Niekro signs a two-year contract with the New York Yankees. Niekro will cover a spot in the New York rotation and enable the Yankees to shift Dave Righetti to the bullpen. Niekro had an 11-10 record with a 3.97 ERA with the Atlanta Braves in 1983.
2010: Troy Glaus, a third baseman, signs a one-year contract with the Atlanta Braves. Glaus will make an appearance while hitting in 128 games.18 home runs and 240/.344/.400 in his last major league season.
MLB History 1920: Red Sox owner Harry Frazer argues that Babe Ruth was “one of the most selfish and inconsiderate men ever to put on a baseball uniform” in order to justify selling him to the Yankees.
1927: The Detroit Tigers are accused of throwing a four-game series against the Chicago White Sox in 1917. Judge Landis holds a three-day public hearing to look into this claim. Some Chicago players gave around $45 apiece toward the conclusion of the 1917 season to thank Detroit pitchers for winning their last series against the Red Sox, which helped Chicago win the pennant. No element of the tale is confirmed by any eyewitness.
1934: A fire destroys the newly constructed centerfield bleachers at Fenway Park.
1957: The transaction from last December is nullified when Jackie Robinson decides to retire rather than transfer from Brooklyn to the New York Giants.
1989: Major League Baseball strikes a $400 million pact with ESPN that will start airing 175 games annually on cable television in 1990, three weeks after the league signed a record $1.1 billion network broadcast deal with CBS.
1993: The Baseball Writers Association of America inducts Reggie Jackson as their only player into the Hall of Fame. 93.6 percent of the vote goes to Jackson, who has the lowest lifetime batting average of any Hall of Famer at.262. In his first year of eligibility, he is popular among voters thanks to his 563 career home runs.
1994: Kevin McReynolds is acquired by the Mets from the Royals in exchange for outfielder Vince Coleman.
1998: On his sixth attempt, Don Sutton gets elected to the Hall of Fame. Sutton played for three different organizations, won 324 games, and made it to the postseason. Over 28 seasons, he struck out 3,574 hitters.
2010: After a 22-year career that started in 1988 with the Montreal Expos, Randy Johnson announces his retirement. The 6’10” left-hander won five Cy Young Awards, tossed a perfect game and a no-hitter, and recorded 4,875 strikeouts, the second-highest total in major league history after Nolan Ryan.
2011: Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar are inducted into the Hall of Fame.
2012: Chris Volstad is traded by the Cubs to Miami in exchange for Carlos Zambrano. Despite his accomplishments over the years, Zambrano is seen as a chronic dissatisfied person, and the new administration in Chicago did not want to put up with his sporadic outbursts. He left his club after a difficult game on August 12th.
