The Buffalo Bills are attracting attention with consecutive high-scoring road games that have supporters both excited and alarmed. They are riding a roller coaster of offensive fireworks and defensive vulnerability.

Following a thrilling 44-42 loss to the Los Angeles Rams that ended their seven-game winning run, the Buffalo Bills made a stunning comeback, defeating the Detroit Lions 48-42 and ending the Lions’ franchise-record 11-game winning streak.

Buffalo’s defense, though, is barely surviving. These last two weeks might have easily been a complete disaster if it weren’t for their powerful offense scoring enormous numbers of points.

On his podcast, NFL expert Dan Patrick recently expressed his concerns about the Bills’ defensive shortcomings.

“This is what worries me about the Buffalo Bills. if, in some way, Josh Allen performs poorly during the playoffs, considering how bad their defense is. Patrick said frankly, “They score points on offense, and the defense kind of just hangs on for the ride.”

The defensive statistics paint a harsh picture. The Bills let up an incredible 521 yards to the Lions, their worst performance of the season, after giving up 457 yards against the Rams.

With a season-high 494 yards and five touchdown passes to match his career-high, Jared Goff completely destroyed Buffalo’s secondary.

The performance is still unacceptable, especially against a juggernaut like Detroit, even though the Bills were without a few defensive starters.

It may seem like a victory to limit the Lions to 48 running yards, but context is important.

Only 15 times did Detroit run the ball, and two of those rushes were led by Jared Goff.

The focus now shifts to Bobby Babich’s defense. They must quickly tighten.

The Bills can no longer rely on outscoring opponents each and every game.

Their hopes of winning the Super Bowl might be ruined by a single, pivotal playoff shootout loss brought on by defensive lapses.
