ESPN: Yankees steal a $100 million star from their bitter division rival.
After losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets, the New York Yankees have bounced back well. To far, the Yankees have acquired Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers and signed free agency starting pitcher Max Fried. The main weaknesses in the lineup remain, even though New York may yet add a bit more pitching to the bullpen. The Yankees will probably try to sign one of the best free agency outfielders since they obviously need to replace Soto in the outfield.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently forecast that the Yankees will sign a free agent outfielder from a division opponent. According to Miller, Anthony Santander, an outfielder with the Baltimore Orioles, would betray his old organization and accept a five-year, $100 million contract with the Bronx Bombers.
“There’s no need in burying the lede because it was previously stated in the Teoscar Hernández piece that the Yankees are expected to pursue Anthony Santander vigorously. We’ll go with it,” Miller wrote. “With Santander joining Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Austin Wells, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Anthony Volpe, and the legendary wunderkind Jasson DomÃnguez, New York might have a formidable top seven lineup even without Soto. That’s a great start for the team that is still the favorite to win the American League, even though they still need to work out first base and second base.
Santander would significantly improve the Yankees’ lineup. Yankee Stadium’s hitter-friendly environment would be a huge help to the switch-hitting outfielder. However, he will never be reliable. He is a 400 OBP type of player who may hit 40 home runs at times over his five-year contract with the Bronx Bombers.
Replicating the offensive that led Aaron Boone and company to the 2024 World Series would be greatly aided by this change.
