ESPN: The Cowboys named “offensive genius.” as a perfect replacement for HC Mike McCarthy
Numerous NFL analysts and experts are examining what different clubs may do to their rosters and coaching staff after February in order to bolster their franchises, even before the NFL offseason officially begins. Many believe that Jerry Jones will leave the Dallas Cowboys and replace head coach Mike McCarthy.
It should go without saying that several names are being proposed as McCarthy’s potential successors. However, one might be superior than the others.
Cowboys ought to consider the “most sought-after coaching candidates.”
Everyone has a favorite when it comes to the future coach of the Dallas Cowboys, and The Landry Hat’s Jerry Trotta has a favorite. He names Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as his top pick in an article he wrote for the newspaper on December 12.
“During the last employment cycle, Johnson was one of the most sought-after coaching prospects. He looked to come to an agreement with the Commanders over a number of conversations, but he was abruptly pushed out to return to his position in Detroit, Trotta wrote.
Ben Johnson has the numbers on his side, and they don’t lie. As of Week 15, the Detroit Lions lead the league in points scored (32.1) and yards per game (394.8).
Trotta refers to Johnson as “one of the top play-callers in the NFL,” in part because of those stats and maybe other considerations. Alongside Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, and Andy Reid, he is at the top.
Trotta declared, “Johnson is the mastermind behind the whole thing.” He creates the plan and calls the plays. He has catapulted Jared Goff, a quarterback with very little skill, into the MVP discussion.
Johnson’s offensive genius is exactly what Dallas should target after they made Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb among the highest-paid players at their respective positions, Trotta continued, adding that “it’s unlikely that Jerry and Stephen Jones” would hire someone without any prior head coaching experience.
Take a look at Goff’s success under Johnson. Although one might argue that Johnson could work better with a rookie quarterback and Prescott is more of a seasoned quarterback than Goff, he might be able to accomplish the same for Prescott.
Mike Vrabel Is Also Associated With The Dallas Cowboys
Mike Vrabel, the former Titans coach, is another name being floated with the Cowboys. NFL analyst Jeremy Fowler claims that Vrabel is a strong contender in a story for ESPN.
According to Fowler, “some around the league have noted the Cowboys as a natural fit [with Vrabel].” “They valued Mike McCarthy’s experience and pedigree, and they could lean that way again, if they decide to make a change at all.”
During his six seasons with the Tennessee Titans, Vrabel finished 54-45. The Titans won the AFC South in 2020 and 2021 and advanced to three playoffs while he was their coach.
The Cowboys are probably not thinking about it at the moment, even if and when they hire a new head coach. The 5-8 team’s next game is Sunday, December 15, against the Panthers.
