ESPN: Juan Soto finally reveals what he went through during his stay with the Yankees.
The multimillion-dollar outfielder is reestablishing contact with his opponents who are now across town.
Juan Soto surprisingly disclosed last week that he hadn’t communicated to any of his former Yankees since they lost the 2024 World Series in October, following the official signing of his record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets.
The outfield player stated, “I haven’t talked to any of those guys,” at his New York news conference. “We talked to them through playoffs, end of the playoffs but after that… I haven’t talked to any of [them].”
There was really a straightforward rationale for his radio quiet, even if this was an odd admission given that a) the Yankees were still in the race for Soto until the very end and b) he had just spent the whole 2024 season with them.
“The reason there was no communication between Juan Soto and his former Yankee teammates is simply that Soto changed his cell phone number,” MLB expert Bob Nightengale wrote on X this week. During his free agency, he was inundated with outside calls and desired seclusion.
Additionally, Nightengale stated, “Soto is now reaching out to former Yankee teammates.”
The Yankees ultimately failed, giving Soto a 16-year contract worth $760 million, which was $5 million less than what owner Steve Cohen and the Mets had agreed to and one year longer.
The 26-year-old struck the biggest contract in American sports history to play baseball in Queens.
