ESPN: Saquon Barkley hopes to set yet another NFL record
This Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers might mark franchise history for the Philadelphia Eagles running back. By season’s end, he may surpass Eric Dickerson’s NFL record.
Before he had the opportunity to create some with the Eagles, Saquon Barkley wanted to be a student in team history.
The running back, who just inked a $26 million guaranteed contract with Philadelphia, examined some of the team’s greatest backfield players in depth.
He discovered Wilbert Montgomery. had a crush on LeSean McCoy.
Barkley then set his eyes on them, and he has the opportunity to become the Eagles’ greatest single-season rusher this week against Carolina.
If Barkley can get past those two Eagles Hall of Famers, he has a chance to surpass Eric Dickerson’s 1984 NFL single-season running record of 2,105 yards.
“That’s your objective,” Barkley stated. “You want to enter here and make a lasting impression on a location or a franchise.”
The current status of Barkley’s record-chasing endeavors is as follows:
With an average of 124.9 yards per game, Barkley has amassed an NFL-high 1,499 yards running through 12 games. He would exceed the NFL record that has been in place for 40 years at that rate and with one more game left than Dickerson.
Barkley must run 108 yards against the Panthers in order to surpass McCoy’s 2013 Eagles record of 1,607 yards. In 1978, Montgomery ran 1,512 yards.
“I know what I am capable of,” Barkley stated. “Hiding to the script is how I achieve that.”
With eight consecutive victories, the Eagles (10-2) have taken command of the NFC East and are still vying for the conference’s top spot. With a little assistance from Jalen Hurts, Barkley has taken the lead and is now being considered for MVP. With 11 running touchdowns, the former New York Giant is also third in the league.
Barkley should be able to get a lot of yards against Carolina (3–9).
Last week, Tampa Bay’s Bucky Irving ran for a career-high 152 yards (he had never surpassed 100 yards) against the Panthers, who are currently 32nd in the league against the run.
“What he is doing is amazing. For a long time, the record has held up. It’s absurd, I mean, 17 or 14 games,” said Shy Tuttle, a defensive lineman with the Panthers. “Whoever breaks it, whether it’s Saquon or someone else, it’s an amazing accomplishment. It’s a record that has been held for a long time.”
Barkley equaled Montgomery for the most 100-yard games in an Eagles season with eight, and he leads the NFL with four running touchdowns of 25 yards or more this season.
On Sundays, you may view the player. According to offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, “we get to see the person every other day during the week.” “He is unique. Ultimately, he is a unique individual and a terrific colleague. His ability to relate to everyone unites them all. He is among the greatest.
