ESPN: Bills sign A two-time All-Pro safety in a blockbuster deal, Projecting the Buffalo Defense’s Playoff Lineup.
Micah Hyde was added to the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad on Wednesday. Will the safety start for the defense in the postseason?
Micah Hyde, a two-time All-Pro safety, joined the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad on Wednesday. When talking about how soon the veteran fan favorite may return to the team’s active roster, head coach Sean McDermott used extreme caution.
“Micah is in a practice squad role, just to set expectations,” McDermott said reporters. “We have complete faith in Cole Bishop, Kareem Jackson, Damar Hamlin, and Taylor Rapp. All of them have been doing admirably for us in their current positions. Micah is in a practice squad position, and they will continue to play those duties. It is great to have him and his family back.
Hyde has been a starting safety for the Bills for the last seven years. One of the NFL’s top tandems at the position was formed by the 2017 Pro Bowl pick and Jordan Poyer. Hyde considered retiring while Poyer signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency.
The 33-year-old Ohio native acknowledged that this will be his last season on the field, but he made a suggestion that he may eventually join Buffalo’s coaching staff.
Hyde said, “Listen, I’m here to help.” In San Diego, I left my ego behind. As I have stated, the objective has always been and will continue to be to bring a title back here. You guys will probably be sick of me until then because, if I do retire at the end of this season, you might see me doing something else here until we win a title.
On Sunday, the Bills (10-2) return to action as they travel to Los Angeles to play the Rams (6-6).
Micah Hyde Joins the Bills and Predicts Buffalo’s Playoff Defensive Starters
Protective Ends: Since returning from a four-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct code, Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa Von Miller’s output has drastically decreased. Prior to the suspension, the future Hall of Famer had three sacks in four games; however, after his return, he has only had one in four games.
This prediction is made much easier by Miller’s inefficiency. At this point in their careers, Rousseau and Epenesa are much more well-rounded athletes, and they have competed with one another in rushing the passer. Together, they have paced the Buffalo defense with 11.5 sacks.
Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones are defensive tackles.
This season, Oliver and Jones have failed to measure up to their usually high expectations, which is a major factor in the Bills’ inability to consistently stop the run. Nevertheless, Jordan Phillips, Quinton Jefferson, and Austin Johnson—the current reserve options—will not take their spot.
However, once DeWayne Carter is activated off injured reserve, there could be some interest. Prior to sustaining a wrist injury, Carter was having a strong debut season. He might advocate for a more significant role in the postseason if he continues where he left off.
