Yankees Trade All-Star Closer Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs - The New York Times

Perhaps baseball’s greatest and most intense rivalry is between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The rivalry between the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers has intensified in recent years, but it still pales in comparison to the animosity between the Rox Sox and the Yankees. Because the two competing teams have extremely similar goals, such as Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes, this winter’s competition continues into free agency. Boston has already acquired a former Yankee, albeit a contentious one, on a one-year contract before the stars sign with either of the two teams.

Aroldis Chapman blows another save as Mets topple Yankees

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Tuesday morning that veteran flamethrower Aroldis Chapman and the Red Sox have reached an agreement on a one-year contract. For the 2025 season, the agreement is valued at slightly over $10 million. Chapman played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh or eighth inning last season. After being traded to the Yankees, where he pitched around 300 innings over seven seasons, he started his career with the Cincinnati Reds. Throughout his 15 major league seasons, the flamethrower has also pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, and Texas Rangers.

Even though he isn’t the same pitcher he was in 2015, Chapman recorded a decent 3.79 ERA in 2024 despite frequently hitting fastballs in the triple digits. It’s crucial to remember that Kirby Yates, Blake Treinen, and other one-year deal contenders will profit this winter if Chapman receives more than $10 million annually.
