Frankie Montas bounces back after disastrous Yankees debut

With their most recent free agent acquisition, the New York Mets strengthened their starting lineup on Sunday.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Mets have agreed to a two-year, $34 million contract with pitcher Frankie Montas. According to reports, the contract is pending a physical.

In 2024, the starting rotation for the Mets was ranked in the middle of the pack. With a combined ERA of 3.91, the team’s starters were 12th in the big leagues.

The Mets may have acquired Montas as insurance in case either starting pitcher, Luis Severino or Sean Manaea, decides to go, since both are testing free agency this winter.

Talkin' Yanks (@TalkinYanks) Frankie Montas appeared in just 10 games with the Yankees including postseason since they traded for him in August of 2022 He had a 6.21 ERA in those outings : r/NYYankees

Last season, Montas played for both the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cincinnati Reds. Montas made 30 total starts, recording an ERA of 4.84 and a WHIP of 1.34.

Montas has had a few exceptional seasons in the past, despite his lackluster current output. During his 16 starts in 2019, he has an ERA of 2.63 while playing for the Oakland A’s. With a 3.37 ERA in 32 starts in 2021, Montas also received a few Cy Young votes.

Like they did with another former Yankee Luis Severino, the Mets could believe they can help Montas return to his previous level of play.

The Mets are still hoping for a larger capture in free agency, even though Montas could end up being a wise decision in the future.
