CBS Sports: Buffalo Bills linked to Hall of Fame head coach, Set to Replace HC Sean McDermott.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills are currently two of the NFL’s top contending clubs with the greatest Super Bowl chances. Even making it to the Super Bowl would be a huge achievement for the Bills. However, anything less than a trip to the AFC Championship would be disappointing for Sean McDermott’s side, which has lost the big game four times and has yet to win a Lombardi Trophy.
Nick Sirianni’s Eagles, meanwhile, are in a similar position even though they have had greater past success. The Eagles have actually appeared in a Super Bowl in the last ten years, unlike the Bills. They are only now, four points from winning SBLVII, desperate to get back. Philadelphia would be disappointed if they didn’t make it to the NFC Championship, much like in Buffalo.
Therefore, even if it doesn’t seem likely that the Eagles or Bills would give a coaching change any thought given their current positions, things might change once the postseason results are in. If so, if he’s still available, one large heavy hitter may be a good fit for the Eagles or the Bills.
Which team would prefer to have Bill Belichick: the Philadelphia Eagles or the Buffalo Bills?
The Buffalo Bills have won ten or more games five straight seasons under Sean McDermott’s leadership. With seven games remaining with an 8-2 record, the odds are that he will reach at least ten victories this season once more. Winning in the regular season is difficult, particularly if you’re the Miami Dolphins or New England Patriots in 2024, but the Bills have greater goals and expectations.
Since replacing Doug Pederson after the 2020 season, Nick Sirianni has never missed the playoffs. However, Coach Sirianni appeared to be on the firing line at the start of the 2024 league year after two Wild Card defeats in three years and an epic collapse at the close of the 2023 season.
However, all rumors that McDermott and/or Sirianni are on the hot seat have been cast aside since the Bills and Eagles have an 8-2 start. Nevertheless, based on how both teams perform in the postseason, when wins and losses count far more, neither coach gets off the hook.
Since Belichick is only expected to be a coach for a few more years and won’t want to take over an organization that requires a complete overhaul, he might be the ideal choice for a talented club that needs a fresh perspective. It has been suggested that the Dallas Cowboys would be a perfect fit.
Jerry Jones, the owner and general manager of the Cowboys, has stated repeatedly that he will not appoint a general manager and that he will not in any way lessen the job of Jones’ right-hand man, Will McClay. And since that power balance in Dallas has long been established, Belichick might feel comfortable with it.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills are also good choices.
