CBS Sports: The New York Giants Close in to Sign an elite QB prospect, Set to end Daniel Jones era.
The New York Giants will soon be ending the Daniel Jones era.
In 2024, Jones has been among the league’s worst quarterbacks. Jones led New York to the worst 2-8 record in the NFC East after agreeing to a four-year, $160 million contract with the Giants after making a postseason appearance in 2022. He has a 27th-worst QBR (Total Quarterback Rating) of 46.5 and has thrown eight touchdowns to seven interceptions.
In the hopes that Jones could succeed Eli Manning and guide the Giants back to glory, the team selected him sixth overall in the 2019 Draft. Nevertheless, it never happened since most Giants supporters want Jones to be benched.
Even earlier this week, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter stated that he thinks Jones played his final snap for the Giants, and that following the bye week, they will turn to backup Drew Lock.
Although a deal never happened, the Giants even tried to move up to select a quarterback in the 2024 Draft.
Who will be the Giants’ quarterback for the upcoming campaign, given that they appear prepared to let go of Jones? This elite prospect is expected to be New York’s new starter in 2025, according to an NFL insider.
Cam Ward will take Daniel Jones’ spot as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants, according to an NFL insider.
According to Dan Duggan, an NFL insider for The Athletic, Cam Ward of the University of Miami will start for the New York Giants in place of Jones next season.
Ward’s season is Heisman-worthy. After losing to Georgia Tech, the Hurricanes are 9-1 and ranked 12th in the country. He has passed for 3,494 yards, 32 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. In addition, Ward has three touchdowns and 182 rushing yards.
“Jones’ time in New York is over. Soon, the Giants will sit him, and at the end of the season, they will sever their relationship with him. This previous offseason, the Giants attempted to find a replacement for him but were unable to advance and chose not to take players like Bo Nix, J.J. McCarthy, or Michael Penix Jr., all of whom were still available when New York selected wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6. The Giants are now forced to select a quarterback, right or wrong, and they are in a great position to do so right now. New York has a strong chance of selecting in the top three of the 2025 draft at 2-8, according to Duggan.
The Giants presently own the second-overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft as of Week 11. If that pick holds true, they could sign Ward and hope he becomes their franchise quarterback, something Jones was unable to do.
