CBS Sports: Former quarterback and assistant coach for the Detroit Lions has passed away.

Greg Landry, an assistant coach and former quarterback for the Detroit Lions, passed away at the age of 77, the organization reported.

The Lions said on social media on Friday, “We join the NFL community in mourning the loss of former Lions quarterback and coach Greg Landry.”

It was not stated what caused his death.

Landry, a native of New Hampshire, excelled during his time at UMass until the Lions selected him with the 11th overall pick in the 1968 NFL Draft. In 1971, he started for them as a starter and went on to have his best season, ultimately being selected for his only Pro Bowl.

He was a member of the Lions (1968–78) and later the Baltimore Colts (1979–81) before playing in the USFL for two seasons. He then made a brief return to the NFL in 1984, helping the injured Chicago Bears defeat the team that had drafted him.

In 146 games (98 starts), Landry passed for 16,052 yards with 98 touchdowns and 103 interceptions.

Along with being a superb passer, he also gained 2,665 yards and 21 touchdowns as a rusher.

After retiring from the game, Landry worked as an assistant coach with the Bears (1986–1992), Lions (1995–1996), and Cleveland Browns (1985). For his final five seasons with the Bears, he served as offensive coordinator. From 1993 to 1994, he was also Illinois’ offensive coordinator.
