Terrel Bernard climbs to centerpiece of Bills defense after 'next man up' journey - The Athletic

Terrel Bernard, the rising star, might be back on the field soon after the Buffalo Bills’ Monday Night Football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In the team’s September 12 victory over the Miami Dolphins, Bernard injured his pectoral, and Adam Schefter of ESPN initially predicted that he may miss up to a month. On September 21, though, Bills head coach Sean McDermott gave a more upbeat report on Bernard, stating that it is likely that the team’s defensive captain won’t have to go on injured reserve.

According to SI.com, McDermott stated, “Don’t know anything else right now.” Though at this point I am unable to say for sure, I don’t think so. It doesn’t seem like we have to proceed in that route.

Even though McDermott was unable to confirm that Bernard would not require a trip to the intensive care unit and would instead recover for at least four weeks, reporter Matt Parrino of Syracuse.com observed that it was a “encouraging update.”

When the Bills take on the Jaguars on Monday, they will be without Bernard. The team’s goal is to get to 3-0 and take an early lead in the AFC East. Early in the week, McDermott informed reporters that nickel cornerback Taron Johnson and Bernard would not be playing.

Tremaine Edmunds left the position before the 2023 season, giving Bernard the opportunity to take over at middle linebacker. During the previous season, Bernard started all 17 games and recorded 143 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, and three interceptions.

This week’s injury report for the Bills was very lengthy, with defensive ends Casey Toohill, Javon Solomon, and Dawuane Smoot all being labeled as limited. Even though every member of the Bills’ offense was fully engaged in practice, they too suffered injuries. Running back Ty Johnson, tight end Quintin Morris, and quarterbacks Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky were all named on the final report.
