CBS Sport: Cowboys close in to sign Titans mega star in a blockbuster deal.
On Sunday, September 15, the Dallas Cowboys were defeated by the New Orleans Saints, 44-19 in the end. NFL writer and expert Matt Holder writes that Week 2 for “Mike McCarthy’s crew was a humbling experience as the Saints jumped out to an early lead and never looked back” in a story published on September 16 for Bleacher Report. Dallas will now need to find answers as they prepare to play Baltimore the following week at 1-1. He also suggests that the team “add now” a former player for the Philadelphia Eagles.
In “Prioritizing Every Roster’s Biggest Weaknesses Before Week 3,” Holder makes the suggestion that the Cowboys sign linebacker Zach Cunningham. Cunningham is marked as “add now” by him.
He said, “The Cowboys’ linebackers struggled to contain Kamara on Sunday, despite their strong performance in Week 1.” Along with 65 yards and another touchdown as a receiver, Kamara ran for 115 yards (5.8 yards per run) and four touchdowns. Cunningham might be useful to have on the practice squad as a backup plan, since he might at least help slow down the running game.
Cunningham was chosen with the 57th overall pick by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Cunningham was waived by the Texans in December 2021; the same month, the Tennessee Titans claimed him off waivers. Texas cut Cunningham go in February 2023, and the Eagles acquired him in August of the same year. In March 2023, he became a free agent.
Devon Platana, a writer for Section 215 on September 14, talks about former Eagles players like Cunningham who are available as free agents. He made some unfavorable remarks regarding the linebacker’s tenure with the Eagles.
He wrote, “Zach Cunningham only played for the Eagles for one season, and it was, to put it mildly, forgettable.” “In 13 games with Philadelphia, the former 2017 57th-overall pick recorded 54 solo tackles, four interceptions, and a fumble recovery, but he did not accomplish anything noteworthy.” As the season went on, so did his play; in six of his final nine games, he had a Pro Football Focus defense grade of 59.6 or below.
“In the end, Cunningham is an inconsistent tackler and pass rusher who also has his struggles in coverage,” Platana continued. His career prospects will be limited until he demonstrates his ability to play a more comprehensive game.
