Daniel Jones Is Great and We Will Not Regret This Blog in a Month - The Ringer

Daniel Jones’s decline in performance would be more than just acknowledged if he were benched for the duration of the 2024 season. The New York Giants would have virtually given up the current campaign at that point. A losing season is just unaffordable for general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, especially if they want to be around in 2025.

The Giants haven’t given Daboll a young quarterback to work with yet, and after giving Jones a four-year, $160 million contract after only one postseason victory in five seasons, it’s possible he won’t get another shot.

Jones is obviously on a short leash following his dreadful performance in Week 1, which includes a pick-six and a red zone interception. However, their prospects of winning football games won’t be much increased by switching to backup Drew Lock.

The injury guarantee clause in Jones’ deal is one of the Giants’ largest obstacles because, if not managed correctly, it may have a major effect on the team’s pay limit.

New York Giants Urge Patience With Daniel Jones, But Season Closes In

In the event that Jones has a season-ending injury and is unable to pass his year-end physical in March, the Giants would bear the financial responsibility for his $41.6 million 2025 cap hit, or 15.22% of the team’s cap space. A situation like this could be financially disastrous and be viewed by the front office as malpractice.
