Breaking: The Dallas Cowboys extended a rookie star’s contract with a massive offer.
The Dallas Cowboys gave both Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb huge contract extensions this offseason after concluding protracted contract discussions.
Micah Parsons’ rookie contract expires after the 2025 campaign, meaning that one member of their trio of stars needs to be signed to a long-term contract. Luckily for the Cowboys, their best pass rusher seems happy to postpone signing a long-term contract until after this year.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that Parsons is happy to wait for his next contract until the following offseason, at which point premier pass rushers will command a higher price on the market.
According to insiders, Micah Parsons is expected to sign the next record-breaking contract, but he will have to wait a while for his paycheck. Even while he produces the kind of work that frequently necessitates contractual attention, he is also not in a hurry to sign a contract. If Parsons follows Prescott’s timeline for a possible big-money extension, don’t be shocked… Parsons is anticipated to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history if he closes a deal.
It appears that Parsons would be better off waiting to negotiate his next deal until he sees if his worth continues to rise.
Parsons is expected to fetch about $30 million annually.
After 2025, the Cowboys will have $29 million in cap space.
According to Rapoport, some top pass rushers, like Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt, will probably renegotiate their deals in the upcoming offseason.
Dallas has already selected Parsons’ rookie deal’s fifth-year option. With a $21.3 million cap hit in 2025, he has made it clear that he intends to play for the Cowboys forever.
During training camp, Parsons stated:
When done correctly, there’s nothing like wearing the star. That being said, I intend to stay here for the rest of my life.
The Cowboys will have to manage their cap while finding a way to give Parsons his due. The Cowboys have $29.1 million in cap space for the upcoming offseason, per Over the Cap.
In a recent radio interview with 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones clarified that Parsons’ choice to wait will probably benefit the player in the long run. He makes the observation that Parsons fits right in with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s defensive scheme.
Micah made the thoughtful choice that he believes will allow him to have an even better year. His play, in my opinion, speaks louder than words. I believe he anticipates excelling under [Zimmer] this year. At that point, you’ll most likely feel at ease discussing it.
