Breaking news: Eagles moves to Trade QB Kenny Pickett in a Sellers’ Market
The starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers was injured, making them the first team in the NFL regular season of 2024. Not the last will they be. In actuality, signal caller Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins has already sustained another injury. Rumors about whether either team might be interested in adding a quarterback with starter experience started to circulate after each of those injuries. Kenny Pickett of the Philadelphia Eagles is a quarterback with starting experience who is currently not at the top of his team’s depth chart.
Is Pickett a possible trade target for the Dolphins or Packers? Maybe.
In order to obtain a strong backup, the Eagles themselves traded for Pickett during the summer.
However, if injuries under center keep piling up the way they have in recent NFL seasons, Pickett would be worth more as a trade chip in a market where quarterbacks are looking to offload their positions than he is on the Eagles roster.
QB Kenny Pickett is Traded to the Miami Dolphins
The Packers will start Malik Willis in place of Jordan Love due to an MCL sprain. In August, Willis was acquired by Green Bay from the Tennessee Titans.
In light of Willis’ performance in Week 2, the Packers may decide to pursue a trade for a different quarterback. The Eagles might not be willing to assist an NFC opponent, even if that is the case.
However, Pickett’s possible trade price could increase with the number of teams searching the trade market for a quarterback. Pickett could make sense to land in Miami.
Skylar Thompson will probably start for the Dolphins in Week 3 if Tagovailoa is unable to play. Veteran Tim Boyle is also included on their practice squad.
Pickett is a better choice than either quarterback. Zach Pressnell of Fansided suggested that the Dolphins trade for Pickett on September 13.
Pressnell stated, “Pickett has occasionally shown promise despite being one of the league’s most harshly critiqued signal callers.”
“Even though Pickett has had difficulties, he has thus far in his NFL career been dealt some really terrible cards. His early problems can be directly linked to working with Matt Canada, who is arguably the worst offensive mind in football.
The Dolphins acquired Pickett from the Eagles in exchange for two seventh-round picks as part of Pressnell’s planned deal. The Pittsburgh Steelers sent Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for two seventh-round picks and a 2024 third-round selection.
The Eagles will likely need to receive more than two seventh-round picks in return in order to win a Pickett exchange. The Dolphins may also be considering other quarterbacks including Ryan Tannehill, Joshua Dobbs, and Jimmy Garoppolo.
However, once more, Pickett can become a target for another team before the trade deadline if a deal to the Dolphins falls through.
Is Pickett Still the Eagles’ Backup Quarterback?
The Eagles should not trade for Pickett during the course of the upcoming month for one clear reason. Pickett’s trade will deplete Philadelphia’s quarterback pool.
Jalen Hurts, the quarterback for the Eagles, has a past of injuries. He participated in every game during the previous season, but he was absent from two games in 2021 and 2022.
If the Eagles decide to deal Pickett, they must be entirely satisfied with quarterback Tanner McKee. On the team’s depth chart, McKee is presently ranked as the third quarterback.
Additionally, Pickett’s rookie contract isn’t up for renewal until after the 2025 campaign. Rather than additional draft capital, the Eagles could rather have the cheap backup quarterback with less starting experience.
In twenty-five NFL games, Pickett is 14-10 with a 62.6% completion percentage, thirteen touchdowns, and thirteen interceptions. Additionally, he has an average of 6.3 yards per attempt.
