CBS Sport: The Steelers receive bad news about Russell Wilson calf injury.
Before Russell Wilson snaps the ball in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform, it might be some time. Wilson is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos due to a calf injury that kept him out of the team’s first game. Wilson won’t return until at least Week 4, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, thus Justin Fields will start in his place.
“The Steelers plan to have Justin Fields start the next two games – Sunday in Denver against the Broncos and the home opener Sept. 22 against the Los Angeles Chargers – while Russell Wilson continues to rest his injured calf so it doesn’t morph into something worse,” Dulac said on Friday.
Wilson came with a lower price tag and was an important free agent acquisition for the Steelers. Wilson signed a $1.21 million, one-year veteran’s minimum contract with the Steelers. The Denver Broncos released Wilson, making him available. In exchange for not being on the roster, Wilson will receive $39 million.
Whether Wilson will start after he recovers is still up for dispute. Although he only passed for 156 yards, Fields assisted in leading the Steelers to victory in Week 1. Mike Tomlin, the coach of Pittsburgh, was hesitant to talk about his quarterback depth chart.
Earlier this week, Tomlin declared, “I’m not going to soothe you with hypothetical scenarios.” “Generally speaking, I don’t… Why then begin now? Is it because it’s a national story or because it’s the quarterback position? To be perfectly honest with you, I find some of those stories to be unmoving.”
