CBS Sport: Steelers head coach gives injury update on Steelers favorite player.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will start quarterback Justin Fields for the second straight week while Russell Wilson continues to treat a calf injury in their Week 2 clash against the Denver Broncos, which is just a few days away.
Wilson practiced on Thursday, but he was still limited and didn’t appear to be fully recovered for the game against his old squad. Wilson provided an update on his injury following practice.
“It feels like I’m getting closer and closer,” Wilson remarked. “I’m just trying to be smart and got to do a lot of work today on the field and everything else, throwing and all of that, so just trying to be smart.” Wilson added that the team’s response to the injury has been influenced by its timing.
“With this being so early in the season I also want to be strategic,” Wilson stated. “Coach and I have discussed it extensively, and we have faith in our football group. We have faith in who we are and everything we are capable of. Simply put, we’re attempting to move slowly so that it doesn’t take too long.”
Wilson was sidelined during training camp due to soreness in the same calf, which prevented him from playing for the Steelers against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1. The squad managed to win with Fields in the starting lineup, but they also failed to score even once.
