Building A Jets Core: Connor McGovern - Gang Green Nation

In Week 1 of the NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers crushed the New York Jets 32-19, ruining star quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ comeback from injury. Rodgers suffered an Achilles tear in the first game of the previous campaign, ending his play early and preventing the Jets from qualifying for the postseason for the thirteenth consecutive year. The Jets added center Connor McGovern to their practice squad as part of an attempt to strengthen their offensive line.

This move puts McGovern back together with the team he started 55 games for between 2020 and 2023, according to this post by Ari Meirov on X, the former Twitter.

The Jets cut running back Xazavian Valladay from the practice squad concurrently with signing Connor McGovern.

The offensive lineman was on the Jets roster for seven games before to being placed on injury reserve in October of the previous season. He has also been a member of the Jets for the past four seasons.

Prior to joining the Jets in 2020, McGovern played for three seasons after being selected in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos in 2017. The offensive lineman led the team in offensive snaps taken from 2020 to 2022—a total of 3,055 snaps.

Connor McGovern was reportedly signed by the Jets in an attempt to strengthen their offensive line. In addition, Rodgers still needs to recover from missing the Jets’ three preseason games due to rust following a year in rehabilitation and training camp full workouts.

One of the few bright spots in a lackluster performance for the all-star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers’ first touchdown pass with the Jets was also grabbed by former Green Bay Packers teammate Allen Lazard.

With this touchdown, Rodgers also took the lead in touchdown passes in the NFL history on “free plays,” or touchdowns that result from an offside call against the opposition.
