CBS Sport: Packers HC Matt LaFleur name starting QB ahead of game against Colts.
It seems like Malik Willis is finally getting his chance to start for the Green Bay Packers at quarterback. As long as Jordan Love is injured, Willis will be the starting quarterback for the Packers, according to head coach Matt LaFleur’s Monday announcement to media. Late in the team’s first-week defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil, Love sprained his MCL.
“If Jordan is not cleared, then we’ll start Malik, and Sean [Clifford] will be the backup,” LaFleur was cited by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Willis was chosen by the Tennessee Titans from Liberty in the third round of the 2022 draft. That season, he supported Ryan Tannehill but did play in eight games. He had three appearances in 2023, but Will Levis, who the Titans selected in the 2023 draft, took over as the team’s starting quarterback going forward.
On August 26, 2024, Willis was acquired by the Packers in return for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Willis has completed 35 of 67 throws (52.2%) for 350 yards and no touchdowns with three interceptions in his 12 career appearances. On 32 carries, he also has 144 yards and a touchdown.
That’s not exactly a stellar résumé for a person who could have to fill in for Love for the next four to six weeks as she heals. He played a respectable amount of preseason football for the Titans before being moved, completing 20 of 27 passes (74.1%) for 205 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. On 11 carries, he gained 101 yards. Willis has skill. He had a strong preseason and is quick with strong arms.
While Love heals, Willis will have the opportunity to make an impression in Green Bay.
