CBS Sport: Giants sign in chiefs sensational player in a blockbuster deal.
Ihmir Smith-Marsette, a former wide receiver and returner for the Kansas City Chiefs, was added by the New York Giants to the active roster on Monday, bringing a familiar face to Chiefs fans.
Following their Week 1 loss to Sam Darnold and the Minnesota Vikings, the Giants made a number of announcements, most involving the practice squad. However, Smith-Marsette provides the organization with a fresh prospect to test out for both the offensive and special teams units.
Smith-Marsette was signed after wide receiver and star special teams player Gunner Olszewski suffered a groin injury prior to Sunday’s game. Giants head coach Brian Daboll stated he would miss several games but did not provide a timetable for his return.
Chiefs Kingdom will be familiar with Smith-Marsette because he captured their hearts during the team’s preseason a little more than a year ago. The Chiefs were having trouble finding a spot for everyone between the likes of Justyn Ross, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and other young talents who were vying for the team’s wide receiver position at the time.
In the meantime, Smith-Marsette’s impressive showing in the Chiefs’ preseason games put pressure on the front office to either make him eligible or risk losing him to a waiver claim. In exchange for him, the Carolina Panthers offered up their seventh-round NFL Draft selections in 2025.
Sadly, things didn’t work out in the long run for Smith-Marsette or the Panthers, as the wideout was cut soon before this season’s active roster cuts were scheduled. Nevertheless, he played in all 17 of the Panthers’ games and had the most punt returns in the NFL with 34. He continues to be useful on special teams and returned one for a touchdown.
Smith joined the Chiefs in 2022 after being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He previously played for the Chicago Bears in 2022. Now, he plays for his fifth NFL franchise.
