Breaking news: Yankees Favorite player disclosed plans for his retirement.

Anthony Rizzo's strong 2022 undoubtedly led to his return to the Bronx - Pinstripe Alley

Since joining the team in 2021, Anthony Rizzo has been a crucial member of the New York Yankees, and he freely admits that he doesn’t see that status changing anytime soon.

Rizzo was greeted warmly upon his return to Wrigley Field on Saturday during the Yankees’ game against his old team, the Chicago Cubs. Before the game, the former 2016 World Series champion revealed which team he wants to hang up his cleats with, and Yankees fans can rest easy knowing it is the Bronx Bombers (h/t Michael Sakuraba of New York Yankees on SI), according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch on X:

Rizzo declared, “I really hope to retire as a Yankee.”

Yankees: As his career comes to an end, Anthony Rizzo has stuck to his routine.
Rizzo, 35, is getting close to the end of his remarkable career. The Yankees’ M-O still uses the three-time All-Star, but his output has tapered significantly in 2024 and he is conspicuously absent from a season that won end-of-season honors. In 2020, he won his fourth and last Gold Glove before moving to New York. That was his last one.

Since 2016, the native of Florida has not received an All-Star or Silver Slugger award. Rizzo has contributed eight home runs to the Yanks in 76 games in 2024 while having a.222/.285/.338 slash line and a -0.5 WAR. Despite this, Rizzo has performed admirably at first base, with a 99.5 percent fielding performance that includes 490 putouts, 67 assists, and just three errors made.

If Rizzo retires in the Bronx, it will depend on the Yankees’ postseason performance and offseason payroll.
Rizzo, a 14-year veteran, is still under contract with New York and has a team option until the 2025 MLB season. After the 2022 season, he received a two-year contract worth $41 million. Considering everything, including the pressure on the Yankees organization to field a nearly flawless World Series roster, Rizzo is still a valuable player that the team will probably hold onto. This will be especially true once he has a chance to settle into his rhythm after returning from a forearm injury that kept him out of action from June 16 to September 1.

In New York, he has a strong possibility of making a profession out of it. Still, he built his career in Chicago, where he was one of the best first basemen of his generation for over ten years. The former star slugger for the Cubs revealed how much of a privilege it was to play at Wrigley Field for all those years, giving the team credit where credit was due. For now, though, Rizzo and the Yankees are focused on winning the World Series this autumn. Where Rizzo ends his career will be greatly influenced by whether or not that is accomplished.
