ESPN: Yankees GM Cashman claims that selecting Verdugo over Domínguez gives the team the best chance to win.
General manager Brian Cashman says there are some decisions the New York Yankees need to make. Jasson Domínguez will stay in the minor leagues for the time being.
As the AL East leaders, the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles are closely tied. Domínguez, a 21-year-old prospect, is presently playing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Alex Verdugo is still a left fielder for the Yankees in the interim.
Prior to Friday’s 3-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs, Cashman stated, “Jason’s doing everything he needs to do right now, and Verdugo’s playing obviously better baseball recently.”
“As of right now, we’re sticking with what we have, but we’re always in the position to change our minds at some point, too. So the evaluations that we’re having with our field staff, player development staff, and front office staff are just what is going to give us the best chance to win.”
On Wednesday and Thursday, Domínguez drove home runs for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was taking a batting position. Before Friday’s games, 313 has played in 41 games for the Triple-A squad, with seven home runs, 24 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases.
Before requiring Tommy John surgery on his right arm, Domínguez, also referred to as “The Martian,” made his MLB debut last year and blasted four home runs in eight games.
After being called up for the Little League Classic last month, he was sent back to the minors after going 0 for 4 in New York’s 3-2 loss to Detroit.
Verdugo, who was acquired from Boston in a trade in December, was 1 for 3 at Wrigley Field with a walk in New York’s series opener. With 12 games played, the 28-year-old outfielder is hitting.341 (15 for 44), which has increased his season batting average to.236 with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs.
As part of multiple moves, New York moved up outfielder/pinch runner Duke Ellis from Triple-A and reinstated first baseman Anthony Rizzo from the injured list when the major league rosters reached 28 players on Sunday. Domínguez, nevertheless, stayed in the minors.
