Giants Cut LB Carter Coughlin

On September 5, the New York Giants entered two veteran releases into the NFL transaction log: one who is expected to return at a later time and the other who is leaving with an injury settlement.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the Giants have released LB/ST Carter Coughlin, as reported by NorthJersey.com beat reporter Art Stapleton on X. In response to a fan, Stapleton said that Joe Schoen, general manager of the New York Giants, was likely only using roster manoeuvres rather than saying “goodbye” to Coughlin.

Just as we’ve seen veteran tight end/fullback Jakob Johnson come and go on both the 53-man roster and the practice squad in the early going of the season.

Because of his impact on special teams, Coughlin is expected to return by most.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic responded on social media, saying, “Roster gymnastics are in full force at this time of year,” upon learning of the veteran linebacker’s release. “Coughlin may still play on Sunday as he has remained a key member of the special team.”

Later, Stapleton even claimed, citing a source, that Coughlin will shortly be returning to the practice squad.

Coughlin, who was chosen in the seventh round of the 2020 draft, has established himself in this organization’s ST department. Pro Football Reference reports that since 2020, he has played on special teams more than 1,100 times, compared to just 239 defensive snaps.

In his little time on the field, Coughlin hasn’t exactly packed the stat sheet as a linebacker.

Two of the 41 total tackles the 27-year-old has made have resulted in a loss of yardage. In his career, he has also managed one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, two QB hits, and one sack.

Duggan pointed out that the Giants would have to release or promote a veteran player since they are at their six-vet maximum if Coughlin signs to the practice squad as anticipated. Wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins, tight end Lawrence Cager, offensive tackle Joshua Miles, linebacker Ty Summers, cornerback/returner Duke Shelley, and the previously mentioned Johnson are the current members of the veteran practice squad.
