Breaking news: Steelers Sign Sensational Star to a New Deal.
The Pittsburgh Steelers enter 2024 with a lot of unanswered questions.
Pat Freiermuth, the tight end, is not one of them in the long run.
The squad added some security to a position that had seen a lot of movement until they drafted Freiermuth three years ago when they signed him to a five-year contract on Friday that extends through the 2028 campaign.
Ahead of the season opener in Atlanta on Friday afternoon, Freiermuth celebrated with his teammates at a meeting. In 44 career games, he has 155 receptions for 1,537 yards and 11 touchdowns. After being selected by the Steelers in the second round of the 2021 draft, the 25-year-old Freiermuth was set to enter the final season of his rookie contract.
Russell Wilson, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, stated, “He’s worked so hard and he’s passionate about the game of football, is a great teammate, a great leader, and a great friend.” “We enjoyed a nice meal with the offensive line on Thursday night. We were somewhat aware that something was going to occur. Thus, it was cool to watch him leave the field on Friday. Even though he always smiles, it was really amazing to see a broad smile on his face.”
Arthur Smith, the first-year offensive coordinator, has a history of aggressively showcasing tight ends in his coaching stints, thus Freiermuth might flourish under his tutelage.
Freiermuth is a special player, according to Smith. “He had a great deal of early success in the conference and at Penn State. He has an excellent sense of space. Some guys just seem to understand what you’re seeing. They are able to locate windows in the coverage area. They are skilled in setting men up in man (coverage). He is an extremely good space player and tight end with excellent feel.”
The deal represents the second notable athlete with whom the Steelers have reached an agreement this week. On Tuesday, the team inked veteran defensive end Cam Heyward to a three-year contract.
