With backup QB competition heating up, Saints release Nathan Peterman

The quarterback who is the Falcons’ de facto third string has been identified. Nathan Peterman was added to the Falcons practice squad after they traded for Taylor Heinicke.

Peterman will be making his second trip to the NFC South and his fifth NFL squad overall. This offseason, the seasoned backup quarterback (who has also played for the Bills, Raiders, and Bears) is being spent in New Orleans. With two quarterbacks on Atlanta’s 53-man roster, he will fill in as an emergency third-stringer behind Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr.

Although Peterman has built a career out of playing third base and making sporadic appearances in games, he is still most remembered for his unpleasant game experiences with the Bills early in his career. The 2017 Buffalo draft pick was most recently with Las Vegas. However, Antonio Pierce’s squad pushed on, keeping Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew, two QB1 contenders from their training camp. At the moment, the Raiders don’t have a P-squad quarterback.

30 year old Peterman is 1-4 when starting. In Week 18 of 2022, he made his most recent appearance as the Bears benched Justin Fields in order to win the championship and the first overall pick in 2023. Peterman’s career TD-INT ratio is 4 to 13.

Still, the persistent presence of the taxi squad finds ways to function. Peterman spent more than three seasons with the Raiders during the Jon Gruden era. He played with the Bears for the entirety of the 2022 and 2023 seasons, switching between the P-squad and active-roster reserves. Peterman was cut by the Saints in early August after being signed in March.

Heinicke was dealt by the Falcons to the Chargers in exchange for a sixth-round conditional pick. Heinicke, who accepted a wage reduction in the offseason, did not anticipate returning to the Falcons’ 53-man roster in the following season. Atlanta released veteran tackle Julieā€™n Davenport to create space on its P-squad. Davenport, a 32-game starter, hasn’t played in a contest since 2021.
