CBS Sport: 49ers star player rejects commanders trade proposal.
Brandon Aiyuk, the wide receiver who has been the subject of the most rumors among this year’s group of irate players, is finally under control. The 2023 second-team All-Pro is now bound to the 49ers for four years, totaling $120 million, putting a stop to trade rumors and keeping the player in San Francisco until the 2028 campaign.
However, it appears that Aiyuk has added a team to his list of acceptable trade destinations as fallout pieces arise. Apart from Aiyuk’s persistently speculated desire to be traded to the Steelers, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler mentioned in a recent NFL Live appearance that the fifth-year veteran would have accepted a trade to the Commanders.
Jayden Daniels, the starting quarterback Aiyuk played with to finish his college career, is on the Washington roster. Earlier this summer, Aiyuk’s communication with his old teammate made news. During a video conference, Aiyuk informed Daniels that the 49ers did not “want him back, I swear.” After that, it took the parties more than two months to work out an extension, and at the end of the process, there were rumors of a trade. The Commanders appeared as a side-show Aiyuk location; they don’t seem to have really joined the fight.
According to Fowler, the NFC East team did not express a strong desire to sign Aiyuk. The fifth-year wide receiver, who had essentially closed trades to the Patriots or Browns, had to choose between the 49ers and the Steelers because the Commanders were not participating in the Aiyuk sweepstakes.
Late in the process, Pittsburgh was still a potential destination, but San Francisco would have been shorthanded at receiver because Denver turned down a third-round offer for Courtland Sutton. The 49ers had considered trading for the veteran Broncos pass catcher in the event that negotiations broke down and the 2020 first-round pick was really acquired by the Steelers.
Beyond Terry McLaurin, the team’s seasoned number one receiver, Washington has doubts going into the season. In exchange for a 2025 third-round pick, the team sent 2022 first-round pick Jahan Dotson to the Eagles in a pick-swap arrangement. After being cut by the Texans, Noah Brown became the most recent former Cowboy to join Dan Quinn in Washington. Luke McCaffrey, a second-generation NFL wide receiver selected by the Commanders in the third round, has not yet proven to be a reliable starter. On their current seven-receiver depth chart, Washington also includes fourth-year youngster Dyami Brown and veterans Jamison Crowder, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Byron Pringle.
