CBS sport: Raiders sign in Giants sensational CB in a blockbuster deal.

The New York Giants’ roster reduction from ninety-nine to fifty-three players made it evident how much of general manager Joe Schoen’s team this is.

Although he still leaves his mark on the squad, Dave Gettleman’s administration has primarily released players in recent years. Veteran cornerback Darnay Holmes was one of them.

For the fifth-year corner, the writing was clearly on the wall. He had endured a difficult season with the Giants and played almost the whole preseason finale against the New York Jets, sharing the field with other cut players while they tried out for other teams. Gettleman, not Schoen, was the team that targeted him. Maybe this preseason play helped him land the new job. Jordan Schultz claims that Holmes inked a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Holmes’ signing to the main roster rather than the practice squad is noteworthy and reflects Las Vegas’ goals. The Raiders moved quickly to discourage other clubs because they wanted him inside the building. The Raiders probably have two motivations.

First of all, Holmes was Patrick Graham’s backup defensive coordinator in Las Vegas. Prior to his job in Sin City, Graham was successful with New York and helped to both design and use Holmes.

Additionally, the cornerback and Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce have a long-standing friendship. In addition, the club has very little depth in the secondary. Due to its lack of established products, Las Vegas is vulnerable to financial disaster in the future.

With his deep system knowledge, Holmes is a lock to be Nate Hobbs’ backup slot cornerback.

Though his coverage abilities are still raw and result in far too many penalties, Holmes will be hoping that his toughness helps him succeed in what is arguably the most comfortable setting outside of the Giants.
