CBS Sport news: Eagles signs Alabama’s top favorite DT in a blockbuster deal.
Defensive tackle Byron Young played four seasons for Alabama and was teammates with four current Philadelphia Eagles players: offensive tackle Tyler Steen, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, cornerback Eli Ricks, and guard Landon Dickerson.
Young rejoined them as an Eagles teammate on Thursday.
Young was released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday, and Philadelphia claimed him off waivers.
With Young now on their 53-man active roster, the Eagles dismissed defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu to make room for him. On Philadelphia’s depth chart, Tuipulotu was designated as defensive tackle Jordan Davis’ backup.
On Tuesday, Young made it through the Raiders’ first roster cut from the preseason cap to the regular-season limit. However, Young was among the players discarded by the Raiders to provide space for the new players on Wednesday when defensive tackle Jonah Laulu and defensive back Thomas Harper were granted to Las Vegas as waiver claims.
Although Young was selected in the third round of the draft and signed with Las Vegas for the 2018 season, he didn’t see much action as a rookie.
Young played in six games and saw action in 13 special teams plays and 99 defensive snaps. In 2023, he tallied four tackles.
Young played 83 defensive snaps in the Raiders’ three preseason games this month. In addition to recording one sack and one interception, he made three tackles.
The only Alabama graduate on Philadelphia’s roster is quarterback Jalen Hurts, who did not play alongside Young for the Crimson Tide.
